Japanese Flash Brew Iced Coffee 🇯🇵🧊 Bright, Balanced, and Ice-Cold
— Brewed Hot, Shocked Cold, and Packed With Flavor
Japanese Flash Brew Iced Coffee is the ultimate way to enjoy iced coffee with the aroma and complexity of hot brew and the crisp, refreshing chill of cold brew — all in minutes.
By brewing directly over ice, the coffee’s flavors are instantly locked in, giving you a clean, vibrant cup with zero bitterness and maximum clarity.
Ingredients (Serves 1–2)
- 20–24g fresh ground coffee (medium-fine grind, about 3 tbsp)
- 150g hot water (just off boil, about ⅔ cup)
- 150g ice (about 1 heaping cup)
- Optional: dash of simple syrup, splash of milk, or citrus twist
Equipment
- Pour-over setup (V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave, etc.)
- Gooseneck kettle (recommended)
- Digital scale (for precision)
- Ice-filled carafe or mug
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Setup
- Place your ice in the bottom of the carafe or mug.
- Set up your pour-over cone with a rinsed filter on top of the carafe.
- Add your coffee grounds to the filter.
Step 2: Brew Directly Over Ice
- Heat water to 195–205°F (90–96°C).
- Pour about 40g of hot water over the grounds to bloom for 30 seconds.
- Continue pouring slowly in circles until you reach 150g total water.
- Let the coffee drip fully onto the ice — it should take around 2–3 minutes total.
Step 3: Serve and Sip
- Once brewed, swirl gently to mix melted ice and coffee.
- Pour into a fresh glass of ice (or drink straight from the carafe).
- Add sweetener or milk if desired, or enjoy black for max clarity.
Flavor Variations
🍊 Citrus Twist
- Add a lemon or orange peel to the finished brew for a bright, aromatic edge
- Pairs beautifully with fruit-forward or Ethiopian beans
🍯 Sweet Cream
- Add a splash of vanilla almond milk, sweet cream, or simple syrup
- Froth milk separately for a café-style finish
🧂 Salted Honey Flash Brew
- Stir in honey and a pinch of sea salt
- Great with dark roast or nutty single origins
Pro Tips
- Use fresh, high-quality beans — the clarity of flash brew highlights origin
- Stick to a 1:1 ratio of ice to hot water for balance
- Don’t skip the bloom — it releases gas and sets up better extraction
- Serve immediately — flash brew is best fresh, not stored
