If you already know the style you want, jump straight to that family. If you do not, start with the Best Beers in the World or Best American Beers lists, then follow the style links that match the bottles you keep liking.

The cluster hubs are built for people who know the neighborhood but not the exact address. IPA and wheat now have complete sub-style maps. Strong-and-dark beer and classic American ale get the same treatment here so stout, porter, pale ale, amber, brown, cream ale and their neighboring styles are not buried in a generic archive.

The big style families

IPA is the hop-forward universe. Wheat beer covers hefeweizen, American wheat, witbier, dunkelweizen, weizenbock and fruit-led wheat beer. Strong and dark collects stout, porter, barrel-aged beer, barleywine and old ale. Classic American ale keeps the middle of the craft shelf visible: pale, amber, brown, cream, blonde, red and California Common.

Lager is the clean-fermented side of the map, from pilsner through bock and kellerbier. Belgian, sour, wild and farmhouse beers are organized around expressive yeast, mixed cultures, acidity and tradition rather than a single color or strength.

Beer by place, season and purpose
